The first day in class can turn out to be a nerve-wrecking event. It’s been long since you entered a classroom, so many thoughts are running through your mind. You are probably wondering what the instructor will be like, what they expect from you and the kind of assignments they will give you. However, your first day in class should not be a scary experience, but rather an exciting one. Use these guidelines to set yourself up for success.

1. Check the syllabus
On your first day in the classroom, familiarize yourself with the syllabus. Sometimes it’s referred to as the course overview, because it contains “at-a-glance” information which will give you an idea of what to expect. Understand what is expected in every unit and know the assignments that carry more marks.

2. Check for recordings or chats
If your class work includes live chats, make sure you confirm attendance in advance. If you are unable to attend during the planned time, there is no need to worry. Chat sessions are recorded, so you can always ask for the recording. Live chats are the periods that the instructor sets aside to discuss the topics relating to the current topic and the assignment requirements and details. If you can’t make it to the live session, be sure to alert your instructor so that you can agree on the appropriate time.

3. Look out for expectations
Considering that you are now familiar with the course overview, the next step is to check the announcements that your instructor has posted. Instructors usually post an announcement at the beginning of every semester to state their particular course expectations. Analyzing and comprehending the course expectations from the onset will enable you to prepare for a triumphant semester. If there is anything you are unsure of in the course expectations, make sure you ask for clarification from the instructor.
